Cleantok can be so triggering for me. I grew up in a home that was always disorganized and messy, in part due to a lot of nuerodiversity in the family (undiagnosed but strongly suspected in my parents) so everyone struggled with executive function and task management. Now, I have a toddler and a baby, and I was finally diagnosed with ADHD a year ago. Kids make messes, parenting is exhausting, especially when you have a baby not sleeping through the night, and postpartum can really dramatically change what you are capable of. My home is almost always untidy, and frequently actually messy despite constantly cleaning. My husband does do household chores, but our division of labor involves him taking care of the kids while I try to knock out cleaning projects, but so many things can cut into that time. Cleantok feels like it's either people with near-perfect homes talking about regularly cleaning your shower head, or ragebait content. The only content I can really handle is KC Davis, bc her content feels more similar to my level of capability, and she has actual advice for managing a house with ADHD.

Did the common thing of being born blonde and darkening. Now I'm like right on the line. I would consider my hair mousey brown but I've had stylists tell me I'm either dirty blonde or mousey brown depending on who I ask 🤷‍♀️ I don't see a problem with having some pride in having a rare trait but natural or fake it's super weird to make your hair color your personality.

The issue of people not paying attention to captions and stuff is not a tech literacy issue it's a sometimes humans just can't be bothered to read issue. Anyone who has worked retail has experienced having to answer a question like "how much is it?" When the price is in 12" high bright bold signage at eye level right in front of them. Why use their brain to read when they can just vomit out their questions to the worker in front of them? In this case the tiktoker or whatever is the worker. We also have to think about the ratio of people just having brain farts and people who are genuinely just not paying attention compared to everyone else who saw and got it or didn't comment. These videos can have hundreds of thousands of views with 10k comments, I don't think that ratio is far off from your real life interactions. It just feels like it's a worse problem online and related to tech because social media is exposing us to so many more people at once.

I've often said that im really good at finding things online. I understand how to use keywords and phrase things differently or use synonyms to help me find what im looking for if i dont find it in the first serch. I had never been more shocked than when i was in my final semester and i had a group project in the class you could only take when youve done all the prerequisites and my group mates could not find real sources. And this is that the professor had told us what can and connot be used as a source and he told us if we were unsure we could email him the link and he would tell us yes or no. I was shocked like how did you get through all of college without knowing how to research and find real sources? I ended up doing all the work on the project, and one of them had the gal to ask me if i could explain to her the work i did so she could answer questions after our presentation. Like she couldn't even be bothered to read the slides and look at the sources herself, she wanted me to feed her the information. They made my final semester hell, but thats besides the point. Im just shocked at how no one knows how to research or try to figure something out of the dont understanding. I was able to diagnose my pc issue on my own with enough research and testing even though i had never done it before. If something is off with my car, im able to narrow it down to a few issues so my father can help. I've seen so many just ask for others to give them the spark notes of a post because they can't be bothered to read it. I've seen people complain about how they can't understand words in novels or academic resources and how they have to google it, and they demand it be "more accessible." I dont understand why they wouldn't want to know more words why they wouldn't want to be more literate. Looking up words you dont know is a good thing. Having a larger vocabulary is a good thing. It's all just shocking to me how people want to know less. It's a shame how someone cant understand the beauty in poetry writen in books to describe something and want to to be watered down to just something basic.

I kind of fell into the cleaning tok rabbit hole. Im obsessed watching videos of deep cleaning. I grew up in a dirty, hoarded house. (My current apartment is immaculate. If it's not I can't sleep) It really messes a kid up. And sources don't really exist for the people who are forced to live with the hoarders. My goal is to write a book about surving and overcoming growing up in that environment. The thought that parents would exploit that for clout is sickening

I literally cleaned for an entire morning 7 to 12 while house sitting baby sitting and dog sitting . I left out to my old foster parents for dinner and to hang out for 2 hours!!!! I came back to the entire house trashed clothes every where dog wasn’t let out plates dirty.

Utterly regardless of whether this is right or wrong, shaming does not help people change. I don't think anyone who is having this kind of issue keeping the house clean is without shame - and also, parents shaming their child is not going to change their child's messiness. Professional social workers should be available for support to families, online commentary is not a good replacement for that.

man, this made me feel seen, but i still feel confused about my relationship with cleaning. im disabled and have wonky executive functioning. despite this, my father would take everything in my room and place it in a pile, telling me that it had to be cleaned by the time he got home. i never cleaned it, and would end up stuffing all of it in garbage bags and putting it in the basement. this shows in my young adult life. i do not know how to clean and it is a bit stressor in regard to my relationship. i feel so… embarrassed by it, was abused over it, but for some reason, i feel like i just dont care. i dont know. it’s like my shame swallowed me whole, and now im just a ghost. i want to be better. it just feels so fruitless.

  • @JoeJoeTater

I'm very disappointed that you didn't touch on the relationship between moralized cleaning and capitalism. Beyond the point of sanitization and organization, cleaning is a flex. It's a way of saying "Look how much surplus I have. Look how much time and money I can afford to waste on something that wasn't physically necessary.". It's a way of framing workers as morally inferior. It's lawn care for the inside of a house. Notice that the creators you're featuring are housewives with huge houses. They're conspicuously consuming on multiple levels.

Id love to know how the children really feel about their RV life. To me, it reeks of adults wanting to recapture their carefree youth, at the cost of their children's mental health. I mean the mere thought of teenage boys and what they "do" when they have a private moment, and these poor kids not getting any private time, it hurts me for them. Its got to hurt their development. And btw, there are laws in the UK about boys and girls sharing bedrooms after a certain age. Look, abuse happens, much as we wish we didn't. This is a perfect set up for a Josh Duggar.

Student dorms in Germany are generally set up so that everyone has their own room and bathroom with a shared kitchen for several people. These are usually pretty affordable but limited, so universities set up priority rules and waiting lists for them. More commonly, students would rent a regular apartment together to share off campus.

If my daughter told me that it was my house, so it was my room, I would warn her, then if she still refused, I would throw everything on the floor away. Period. If it's my room, then it's my stuff, so I can do what I want with it. No way would my kid get away with that ever. If it kept up, she would have a mattress, pillow, sheets, blanket, door off hinges and nothing else (I would store everything in the attic.) She would have to earn back every single thing.

You have to get it all done in one go or else you still feel overwhelmed but there’s never a day where the mess isn’t added unless no one is at home. I wish people were more understanding of mental illness and cleanliness cause as much as others are upset about it we are also upset about it but usually ruminating about it to no end

The big difference between messy and dirty? I live with mice. I can't leave food on the counters because of them or the ants. There are multi-generations of spiders who I can identify. There's been a can of open soda on tlmy roommate's desk for two years. Yes, there is mold. There is dust. There is dirt. I won't walk without shoes on. I won't take a shower without shoes on. I live in a dirty house. The apartment I used to live in was messy. I was always rearranging furniture and had multiple projects and hobbies going on. But I could clean my house to a reasonable appearance in twenty or thirty minutes. You weren't afraid to sit on the couch. My dirty home affects every faucet of my life. I'm depressed, have bad thoughts, and just don't want to exist. Getting out of bed or coming home after being out takes the strength of an army. I have spent hundreds on trying to get this place clean. But, I live with two people who wouldn't mind living in a used dumpster at this point. There is almost literally no difference in their opinion on dumpster or the current state of our living environment. I have asked, begged, pleaded, yelled, and gone psycho trying to get them to help me clean. Nothing has worked. And now I'm stuck in a depressive cycle where I can't get myself to do what I need to do to get out of here. The difference between dirty and messy? The ability to function and do every day things. The percentage of time you want to just sit down and cry your soul out because it's all so hopeless. The number of Game Over thoughts you have before you get out of bed.

When my wife was growing up her parents treated her and her sisters like slaves and made them clean every day. Their house was cleaner than a hospital. When my wife and I stayed living together she would loser her mind if there were a few dishes in the sink or whatever. I tried to tell her all the time that it’s ok no go a day or two without washing two plates, some utensils, and two cups. We would have big fights about this. Finally she started going to therapy and her therapist helped her realize that it’s ok to relax and take some time for yourself.

Oh god, this is on my mind 24/7. I grew up in, as several other commenters have referenced, a home where cleaning was expected but never explained. This is so embarrassing to admit as an adult. I just genuinely didn't know how to clean aside from, like, tidying when I went to college. When I was 25 I moved into my first proper apartment with a roommate I barely knew, and as it turned out, she was a borderline hoarder. I learned SO fast. Over time, her tendency to put her cat's litter box in the CARPETED living room and just leave piles of trash around the trash can drove me fucking insane, so I moved in with my then-boyfriend. We're getting married in August and it's taken a chore planning app (Nipto) to prevent conflict over what needs done when. I've watched a million cleaning videos and read a million articles on splitting labor. We both work, we're both exhausted, but unfortunately it does have to get done, and since I was tired of asking for help, the app has really come in clutch. When you love someone who has executive functioning issues and you ALSO have executive functioning issues, you have to get creative with problem solving, lol. I also made my fiancé an "easy menu" of twelve simple meals based on pantry staples for his 30th birthday, as he is not opposed to cooking but does become paralyzed by options when he looks in the fridge. What sucks is that this is generally the work it takes to make a good male partner. It took hours of labor for me to make a chore list and it took weeks to compile a thoughtful menu. I unfortunately can't even really fault him for not being gung ho about chores, because I certainly never was, and as a man, it's not his fault that he was socialized differently.

What are they teaching them in school then? I’m Gen X and I learned typing and basic computer skills in high school. I wasn’t allowed to use a calculator during a test. I had to show my work. Are these things of the past like land line phones and the 8 track tape?

I watched this during breakfast. What a wonderful world we live in that we can watch UA-cam videos of women announcing that they’re pregnant and explaining in the most beautiful way why that’s something they’ve always wanted. I literally cried. I know I will never see your child but I am so happy for her and for you❤ I am 22 but I feel like I would have to have you as a mom lol

The lady talking about how everyone’s executive function skills are different is really annoying to me because executive function is an extremely neuroplastic thing and people shouldn’t be able to just use it as a crutch to explain why they can’t do everything in life like anything else the more you practice it the better you get it 🙄

that’s a very good point, but i’d almost argue that that is an accessibility thing. yes, you can try to teach yourself from home, but real change doesn’t happen without having ppl around you who are trained/informed on how to help you improve. which costs money… and we’re all broke 😭😭😭

as a black person it fascinates me how white ppl speak about hair like i watch love island and i feel like the way contestants talk about hair goes beyond a preference for eurocentric beauty standards i’d go as far as calling it fetishisation bcs the way a majority of contestants will obsess over blonde or brown haired girls is not normal

What you're saying is true. White people will fetishize about blond hair, I think the same way black Americans feishize about "good" hair (straighter) or lighter skin or eyes, etc. among blacks.

crazy ex girlfriend got a great song about that "what you missed while you were popular" what the song says - and whats also my experience - is that if you are not the popular kid, you have to get aranged early with standing out, not getting gratification from peers etc. it's tough and lots of people come out of this with psychological problems BUT if you can live thorugh it and work through it, you learn to be self-reliant. to not give a rats ass about other people's opinion about you and that can be extremely freeing. I know so many people, who get stuck in a job and a live, just because they think it's what they need to do and that they think they have to live up to the pressure. but the thing is, you can also decide to step out of that game, to do your own thing. If you only know smooth sailing, you will have a harder time with this. So bullied kids and cast-out kids might grow into more ressourceful adults. And that's what makes them more successful later on, sometimes. the old what doesn't kill you makes you stronger

I grew up in a household where my mother would let food rot before she would believe it had gone bad. She didn't believe in expiration dates, she had to SEE the mold, or the chunks in the milk. I've had far too much spoiled food to ever let food get to that state. To this DAY I still check all my bread/buns, still sniff the milk, still toss crackers if they get even a little stale. I know I'm wasting some things that are still edible, but i CAN'T eat like that again.
